What a Swamp Hut Offers

A swamp hut is a small spruce cabin raised on stilts. Inside, you find a crafting table, a cauldron and a flower pot with a mushroom. There are no chests.

The real value is its spawning area. Witches keep spawning inside the hut's bounds, even after the first one is gone. Each hut also starts with a black cat.

Witches drop redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, glass bottles, spider eyes and sticks. A witch farm built around the hut turns that into a steady supply for brewing and redstone builds.

How Swamp Huts Generate

Swamp huts only spawn in the swamp biome. Mangrove swamps do not count. In Java Edition, huts use regions 32 chunks wide, with at least 8 chunks between attempts.

If the chosen spot is not a swamp, the attempt fails. Swamps are often small, so a hut near spawn is a matter of luck.

Huts sit on the surface, often over shallow water. The stilts reach down to the ground or water below.

Finding a Witch Hut in Game

Swamps are flat and have murky green water, which helps you spot them. Look for a small dark wooden cabin with a pointed roof. At night, you may see a witch standing inside.

Still, swamp trees and vines block your view. A seed map takes you straight to the hut, and it shows if two huts are close together. Two huts in range of each other make an even better farm.

Night is a useful time to search, as long as you can handle mobs. Witches and slimes are common in swamps after dark. A witch standing in one spot under a roof is a strong hint. During the day, lily pads and blue orchids mark the swamp itself, which narrows down where to look.

Swamp huts were added in Java Edition 1.4.2, along with witches. Java 1.14, Village & Pillage, added the black cat that spawns with each hut. Since then, the structure itself has barely changed.

Planning a Witch Farm

A witch farm uses the hut itself as the spawning area. Witches spawn inside the hut bounds, so you build spawning floors at the same height range. Then you push or drop them into a kill chamber.

Plan the build in steps:

1. Light up the swamp around the hut so other mobs spawn less.
2. Light up caves below the hut as far as you can reach.
3. Build spawning floors inside the hut bounds.
4. Add a way to move witches into a kill area.
5. Add an AFK spot far enough away for mobs to spawn.

Witches throw harmful potions and drink healing potions when hurt. So a quick kill system works best. Fall damage or a crushing trap are common choices.

Two huts close together can share one AFK spot. The finder shows when huts sit near each other, which helps you pick the best site.

Remember that the black cat stays near the hut. Give it some space if you want to keep it. A tamed cat also scares away phantoms and creepers.
