Nether Portal Calculator

Linking two portals by guesswork often sends you to the wrong place. This nether portal calculator converts your coordinates in one click. Type your Overworld X and Z to get the matching Nether spot, or go the other way. Then build your portal there, and it links where you want. The page also explains how portal linking works, so you can avoid broken links for good.

How to use the nether portal calculator

  1. Pick the direction: Overworld to Nether, or Nether to Overworld.
  2. Enter the X and Z coordinates of your portal. Press F3 in Java to see them.
  3. Read the converted coordinates.
  4. Go to that spot in the other dimension and build a portal there.
  5. Walk through both portals to confirm they link to each other.

You can keep the same Y level in both dimensions. Only X and Z change.

How Nether coordinates work

One block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. To go from Overworld to Nether, divide X and Z by 8 and round down. To go back, multiply X and Z by 8.

OverworldNether
X 800, Z −240X 100, Z −30
X 1000, Z 500X 125, Z 62
X −29, Z 64X −4, Z 8

Notice the rounding. It always goes down, toward negative numbers. So −29 ÷ 8 gives −4, not −3. That is why Nether travel is so fast: 100 blocks in the Nether covers 800 in the Overworld.

How portal linking works

When you enter a portal, the game converts your position to the other dimension. Then it searches for an existing portal near that point.

EditionSearch in OverworldSearch in Nether
Java (1.16.2+)128 blocks16 blocks
Bedrock128 blocks128 blocks

The search covers the full world height. If it finds several portals, it picks the closest one by straight-line distance. That distance includes Y, so a portal far above or below can lose to one that looks farther on the map.

If no portal is found, the game builds a new one. It looks for a safe spot within 16 blocks first. If none exists, it forces a portal and places a small obsidian platform.

Tips to link portals correctly

  • Build the Nether side by hand. Use the calculator, then place the portal at the exact Nether coordinates.
  • Keep similar Y levels. This avoids the game choosing a different portal.
  • Space out your Overworld portals. Keep them more than 128 blocks apart after conversion to avoid overlap.
  • Remove stray portals. An unused portal nearby can steal the link.

Common portal linking mistakes

The most common mistake is letting the game build the Nether side. The auto portal can land up to 16 blocks away, or even over lava. Then the return trip may link to a different Overworld portal.

Another mistake is forgetting negative rounding. Dividing −29 by 8 and rounding toward zero gives −3, which is wrong. The game uses −4.

Finally, frame size does not change linking. A portal frame can be anywhere from 4 × 5 to 23 × 23 blocks. Only its position matters.

Planning a Nether hub

Many players build a Nether hub with roads to several portals. Because distances shrink by eight, a short Nether tunnel can connect bases that are far apart in the Overworld.

  1. Pick a central spot in the Nether, usually under your main base.
  2. For each Overworld base, use the calculator to find its Nether coordinates.
  3. Build a portal at each result and connect them with tunnels.

Ice roads with boats make travel even faster. Keep each portal well apart, though, so the links stay clean.

FAQ

How do I convert Overworld to Nether coordinates?

Divide X and Z by 8 and round down. Y stays the same.

How do I convert Nether to Overworld coordinates?

Multiply X and Z by 8. Y stays the same.

How far does a portal search for another portal?

In Java 1.16.2+, 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 in the Nether. In Bedrock, 128 blocks in both.

Why does my portal link to the wrong portal?

Another portal is closer to the converted point. Build the matching portal by hand at the calculated coordinates.

Does the Y coordinate change between dimensions?

No. Only X and Z are scaled. However, Y still counts when the game picks the closest portal.

What is the smallest Nether portal?

The smallest frame is 4 × 5 blocks, and the corners are optional. The largest is 23 × 23.
