End Barrens

The end barrens are the empty outer edges of the large End islands. Bare end stone ends in steep cliffs that drop into the void. This end barrens finder reads your seed and marks the nearest barrens on the map above. The map switches to the End automatically, which helps you trace island edges and plan safe routes.

Where end barrens generate

End barrens only appear on the outer End islands. They form the outer edges of the end midlands and end highlands, with steep cliffs below.

In short, they are the rim of each big island. Like the other outer biomes, they exist in Java Edition only. In Bedrock, the End is one single biome.

What you find in the end barrens

Not much, and that is the point. The ground is end stone with no chorus trees. End cities never generate here either.

  • Mobs: endermen only.
  • Blocks: end stone.
  • Terrain: flat edges that end in sheer drops to the void.

Because the barrens border the void, they are where most falls happen. On the other hand, they often look out over smaller islands nearby.

From a distance, the barrens look like a thin ring around each big island. Their cliffs fall away sharply, so there is no gentle slope down to the void. Beyond the edge, you often see small end islands floating nearby. Those little islands make useful stepping stones if you need to cross to another large island.

How to find end barrens with this map

In game, walk outward from any large outer island until the ground runs out. The last strip before the drop is the barrens.

On this map, enter your seed and choose Java. The view jumps to the End and moves to the nearest end barrens, marked for you. For more spots, browse the list on the left. A single click centers the map on any of them.

Use the coordinates to fly there with an elytra. Or teleport in creative with /execute in minecraft:the_end run tp @s X 100 Z.

End barrens tips

Barrens are useful landmarks. When you see them, you know you are near an island's edge. Turn inward to find midlands, highlands and end cities.

Endermen still wander the barrens, so keep a carved pumpkin handy. Above all, carry slow falling potions or ender pearls here. One wrong step sends you into the void.

Reading island edges on the map

The barrens are more useful on the map than on foot. Because they trace the edge of each large island, they show you exactly where the land ends.

So, use them for planning. Before you fly, check the marked barrens and the list on the left. Then note how far it is from one island rim to the next. Short gaps are easy to bridge, while long ones need an elytra.

On the ground, stay a few blocks back from the edge. Endermen can knock you off if you anger them. In addition, shulker bullets from nearby end cities cause levitation, which can carry you over the drop.

If you do fall, an ender pearl thrown toward solid ground can save you. Slow falling potions buy time too.

Version history

The outer End islands appeared in Java 1.9. During 1.13 development, they were split into four biomes, and this edge biome became the end barrens.
