What a Bastion Remnant Holds

A bastion remnant is a huge ruined castle of blackstone. Piglins, piglin brutes and sometimes hoglins guard it. Brutes ignore gold armor and attack on sight.

The chests are worth the risk. They can hold gold blocks, ancient debris, netherite scrap, enchanted gear and lodestones. Bastions are also where you find the netherite upgrade smithing template, which you need to turn diamond gear into netherite.

Other rare loot includes the snout armor trim, the snout banner pattern and the Pigstep music disc.

How Bastions Generate

In Java Edition, bastions share regions with nether fortresses. Each region is 27 chunks wide, or 432 by 432 blocks, with at least 4 chunks between attempts. A bastion has a 3 in 5 chance of being picked for a region.

Bastions spawn in every Nether biome except basalt deltas. So in delta-heavy areas, you see fewer of them.

There are four types:

• Housing units: lots of piglins and scattered chests.
• Hoglin stables: full of hoglins, with ramps and pens.
• Treasure room: magma cube spawners and the best loot in the center.
• Bridge: a long bridge leading to a central chest.

Finding a Bastion in Game

Bastions are big and dark, so they stand out once you get close. Look for black blackstone walls and gold blocks set into them. In crimson and warped forests, though, fungi and fog can hide them.

No item points to bastions. A seed map is the simplest way to find one, and it lets you choose a type you like before you go.

Gold armor helps while you search, because piglins roam far from bastions. Seeing many piglins in one area hints that a bastion is close. However, piglins also live in crimson forests and nether wastes on their own. So treat them as a clue, not proof. The map shows the real location and saves a risky search.

Using the Bastion Remnant Finder Map

Select your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map marks the bastions nearest to the Nether origin, sorted by distance.

Click a result to copy coordinates or a /tp command. You arrive on solid ground at the bastion. Before you go in, put on at least one piece of gold armor so regular piglins stay calm. Avoid opening chests while piglins watch, since that makes them angry.

Bastion Remnant Version History

Bastion remnants were added in Java and Bedrock 1.16, the Nether Update, along with piglins, hoglins and netherite. Piglin brutes followed in 1.16.2. Java 1.20 added the netherite upgrade smithing template and the snout armor trim to bastion loot.

Tips for Raiding a Bastion

Bastions punish careless players. A little planning makes the raid much safer.

• Wear gold armor: one gold piece keeps regular piglins neutral.
• Bring many blocks: bastions have big gaps and lava below.
• Do not sleep: beds explode in the Nether.
• Respect the brutes: they hit hard and ignore your gold.

Piglins get angry if you open chests or mine gold blocks in front of them. Clear or block them off first. You can also trade with neutral piglins by throwing gold ingots at them.

Hoglin stables are full of hoglins, which attack on sight. Warped fungus scares hoglins away, so place some near your path.

Treasure rooms have magma cube spawners in the center. Break or light them before you loot. The main chest there often has the best gear, including ancient debris and netherite pieces.

Fire resistance potions help everywhere in the Nether. Bring at least one for each trip.
