Nether Fortress

You need blaze rods to reach the End, and they only come from nether fortresses. This Minecraft nether fortress finder shows where fortresses generate from your seed. Enter a seed, choose the nearest result and copy the /tp command. You land on solid ground at the fortress, not in a lava lake. Then find the blaze spawners.

Why You Need a Nether Fortress

A nether fortress is a huge network of dark nether brick bridges, halls and towers. It is the only place where blazes and wither skeletons spawn naturally.

Blazes drop blaze rods. You need them for blaze powder, which goes into eyes of ender and brewing stands. Wither skeletons can drop skulls. Three skulls let you summon the wither and earn a nether star for a beacon.

Fortresses also grow nether wart on soul sand near their staircases. You need it for almost every potion. Chests can hold diamonds, gold, iron, saddles, horse armor and obsidian.

How Nether Fortresses Generate

In Java Edition, fortresses share their placement with bastion remnants. The Nether is split into regions 27 chunks wide, or 432 by 432 blocks. Each region gets one structure, with at least 4 chunks between attempts.

A fortress has a 2 in 5 chance of being picked for a region. Otherwise, the region gets a bastion. Fortresses can generate in any Nether biome.

They are long and spread out, often crossing lava seas on tall pillars. Up to two blaze spawner platforms sit on the outside, each fenced with nether brick fence.

Finding a Fortress in Game

No item points to a fortress. Most players walk along one axis in the Nether and look for dark bridges in the distance. Fortresses tend to run in long lines, so once you see one part, follow it.

That search can be dangerous, with ghasts and lava everywhere. A seed map shows the nearest fortress before you even light your portal.

Fortresses often run along the X or Z axis for a long distance. So if you travel at a right angle to that direction, you are more likely to cross one. Nether wastes give the clearest views, while crimson and warped forests block your sight. Soul sand valleys also hide fortresses behind fog and tall bone fossils.

Using the Nether Fortress Finder Map

Pick your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows the nearest fortresses, sorted by distance from the Nether origin.

Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. The teleport places you on the ground at the fortress. In survival, use the nether portal calculator instead. Multiply the fortress X and Z by 8 to find where to build your Overworld portal, then link it close to the fortress.

The 3D view shows the lava seas and cliffs around it. That helps you plan a safe bridge in.

Nether Fortress Version History

Nether fortresses were added in Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease, before the full 1.0 release. Java 1.16, the Nether Update, made them share their regions with the new bastion remnants. That update also let them generate in the new Nether biomes.

Tips for Surviving a Fortress

Fortresses are among the most dangerous places early in the game. Prepare before you go in.

  • Fire resistance potions: blazes set you on fire, and lava is everywhere.
  • A bow and arrows: blazes fly and shoot fireballs, so ranged attacks help.
  • Snowballs: they deal damage to blazes, which makes them a cheap backup.
  • A shield: it blocks blaze fireballs and skeleton arrows.
  • Milk: it cures the Wither effect from wither skeletons.

For blaze rods, find a spawner and build a safe spot near it. Many players fence it in with cobblestone and fight through small gaps. A Looting sword raises your rod drops.

For wither skeleton skulls, hunt in the open halls and bridges. Skulls are a rare drop, so expect to fight many.

Finally, watch your step on the bridges. A fall into a lava sea is often fatal. Place blocks along open edges to stay safe.
