A birch forest is a bright woodland made almost entirely of white-barked birch trees. It feels open and light compared with other forests, and wildflowers cover the ground. This birch forest finder shows you where the nearest one is. Enter your seed above, and the map moves to the closest birch forest and outlines it, with more results listed beside the map.
Where birch forests generate
Birch forests grow in temperate regions with fairly high humidity. They are a common sight, often forming long belts between other woodlands.
Neighbours include forests, dark forests, old growth birch forests and taigas. Dark forests in particular tend to border them. In addition, rivers often split a birch forest from its taller old growth cousin.
The terrain inside is usually gentle, with low hills and small streams. Birch forests also appear on slopes next to mountains. So the same biome can look quite different from one seed to the next. On the map, they show up as long pale-green strips between darker woodlands.
What you find in a birch forest
Birch trees stand about as densely as trees in a normal forest. Between them, patches of wildflowers spread across the grass.
- Plants: wildflowers, rose bushes, lilacs, peonies, lilies of the valley and bushes.
- Trees: birch, with fallen birch logs and a few bee nests.
- Animals: sheep, pigs, chickens and cows.
- Structures: abandoned camps can generate here.
Wolves do not appear in the spawn list, so look in forests or taigas for one.
How to find a birch forest
Type your seed into the map and pick your edition. The map pans to the nearest birch forest and marks it with a biome icon. Then use the list on the left for more spots, ordered by distance. Click one to fly there on the map.
In the game itself, F3 reads minecraft:birch_forest. The pale trunks are easy to spot from far away. To travel, use /tp @s X 100 Z with the map coordinates, or just walk toward the white trees.
Why build in a birch forest
Birch wood has a soft, pale colour that suits modern and Scandinavian builds. Because the trees are short and straight, chopping them is quick. So a birch forest is an easy wood farm.
Wildflowers add yellow and white colour to the floor. Also, lilacs, peonies and rose bushes give magenta, pink and red dye.
However, birch leaves never drop apples. If you want apples, cut oak trees instead. At night, the forest is fairly open, so mobs are easier to see than in a dark forest.
Starting a base in a birch forest
A birch forest is a calm place to spend your first days. Trees are close enough for quick wood, but the canopy is not as thick as a dark forest. So the ground stays brighter and safer.
Food is easy to find, because sheep, pigs, chickens and cows all spawn here. Also, sheep give wool for your first bed. Bee nests are rare, but you might spot one on a birch trunk.
Fallen birch logs are a nice bonus since Java 1.21.5. They give free wood without chopping tall trees.
Finally, think about the neighbours. Dark forests often border birch forests, and they hide woodland mansions. So a base on the edge gives you two biomes in one trip.
Birch forest version history
Birch forests were added in Java 1.7.2. Java 1.14 added lilies of the valley, and Java 1.15 added bee nests. Java 1.21.5 brought wildflowers, bushes and fallen trees. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
Birch Forest FAQ
Is the birch forest common?
Yes. Birch forests are common in temperate, fairly humid areas and often form long strips.
What spawns in a birch forest?
Sheep, pigs, chickens and cows spawn by day. Zombies, skeletons, creepers and spiders appear at night.
Do wolves spawn in birch forests?
No. Wolves are not in the birch forest spawn list. Try a regular forest or a taiga.
Do birch trees drop apples?
No. Only oak and dark oak leaves drop apples.
What is the difference between a birch forest and an old growth birch forest?
In the old growth version, about half of the birches are much taller. Trail ruins can also generate there.
