The forest is Minecraft's most common surface biome. It is full of oak and birch trees, with a few flowers and plenty of wood for an early base. Wolves roam here too. This forest biome finder shows the closest woodland for your seed. The map above flies to the nearest forest and marks it with a biome icon, so you know where to go first.
Where forests generate
Forests appear in moderate temperatures with medium humidity. That covers a lot of the map, so forests make up about 12% of the Overworld. They grow on flat land, plateaus and sometimes on slopes beside mountains.
Common neighbours are plains, taigas, birch forests and jungles. Because forests are so widespread, nearly every seed has one close to spawn. Flower forests, however, never border them directly.
Inside a forest, the terrain is usually gentle. Small hills and rivers break up the trees. Because forests are so large, you can often follow one for a long way without leaving it.
What you find in a forest
Trees grow more densely here than in most biomes. Most are oak, with some birch and occasional large oaks. Leaf litter covers the ground under the trees.
- Flowers: lilies of the valley, rose bushes, peonies and lilacs.
- Other features: bushes, fallen logs and bee nests on some trees.
- Animals: sheep, pigs, chickens, cows and woods wolves.
- Structures: abandoned camps can generate here.
How to use the forest biome finder
Enter the seed and choose your edition. Right away, the map moves to the nearest forest and outlines it. For more choices, look at the list on the left, which sorts forests by distance. Click an entry and the map centres on it.
In game, F3 shows minecraft:forest in the biome line. Mixed oak and birch trees, close together, also give it away. To jump there in creative or with cheats, run /tp @s X 100 Z with the coordinates from the map.
Survival tips for the forest
A forest is a strong starting point. You get wood, apples from oak leaves and plenty of animals for food. Also, wolves spawn here, so you can tame one with bones for an early companion.
However, dense trees block light. Mobs can spawn in dark spots under the canopy, even close to your base. So clear some trees and light up the area.
Bee nests are a nice bonus. Use a campfire under the nest, then collect honey with a bottle. Lilies of the valley also give white dye, which helps with banners and beds.
Forest vs birch forest vs dark forest
Three common woodlands often sit side by side. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right one.
- Forest: mostly oak with some birch, wolves and medium tree density.
- Birch forest: almost only birch trees, wildflowers and no wolves.
- Dark forest: dark oaks and huge mushrooms, with a thick roof that lets mobs spawn by day.
For an early base, the regular forest is the safest choice. It has apples, wolves and enough light to stay fairly safe. A birch forest suits pale builds, while a dark forest is where you look for woodland mansions.
Also, forests come in several shapes. Some cover flat land, and others climb plateaus or slopes near mountains. So check the terrain on the map before you settle.
Forest version history
Forests date back to the earliest versions. Beta 1.2 added birch trees, and Beta 1.4 added wolves. Java 1.15 added bee nests. In Java 1.20.5, forest wolves became the woods variant. Java 1.21.5 added leaf litter, bushes and fallen trees. Abandoned camps came in Java 26.3.
Forest FAQ
What is the most common biome in Minecraft?
The forest. It covers about 12% of the Overworld, ahead of plains.
Do wolves spawn in forests?
Yes. Wolves spawn in forests as the woods variant, so you can tame one with bones.
Can villages spawn in forests?
No. Villages do not generate in forests, but they often sit in plains right next to one.
What flowers grow in a forest?
Lilies of the valley, rose bushes, peonies and lilacs generate here naturally.
Are forests safe at night?
Not really. The thick canopy keeps the ground dark, so hostile mobs can spawn under the trees. Light it up with torches.
