Gold Finder

Gold is useful for piglin bartering, golden apples and powered rails. This Minecraft gold ore finder predicts where gold ore generates from your seed. Enter a seed and the map marks predicted veins near spawn. Click one to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. Then head down, or look for a badlands biome where gold sits near the surface.

Best Y Level for Gold

In most biomes, gold ore generates from Y -64 to Y 32. It is most common around Y -16, inside the deepslate layer.

There is also a small extra batch spread evenly between Y -64 and Y -48. Together, they make the deep layers a solid spot for gold. Many players mine gold while tunneling for diamonds, since the ranges overlap.

Gold in deepslate turns into deepslate gold ore. It takes longer to mine than regular gold ore, so an Efficiency pickaxe helps. If you mine for diamonds at Y -58, you still find some gold, but less than at Y -16. To collect both, consider a tunnel near Y -16 first, then a second one deeper down.

Gold in Badlands

Badlands are the exception. Here, the game adds a big extra batch of gold ore from Y 32 to Y 256. That batch ignores the air exposure rule.

As a result, gold often shows up right on canyon walls and hillsides in badlands. You can collect plenty without going underground. If your seed has badlands nearby, it is the easiest gold source in the game.

Elsewhere, gold from the regular batches has a 50% chance to be skipped when it would touch air. So caves show less of it than solid rock does.

Using the Gold Ore Finder Map

Pick your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows predicted gold veins near spawn, sorted by distance.

Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. You land on the surface above the vein. Next, dig down to the listed Y level and mine around the point.

You need an iron pickaxe or better. Gold ore drops raw gold, which you smelt into ingots. Fortune increases how much raw gold you get.

Limits of Gold Predictions

Caves, aquifers and ravines can remove ore after it is placed. The air rule also skips some blocks depending on what forms nearby. So a marker shows where to dig, not a guaranteed count.

For badlands gold, the biome edge matters. Check that the marker falls inside the badlands area on the map.

What to Do With Gold

Gold has more uses than it first seems. Here are the most common ones:

  • Piglin bartering: throw gold ingots to piglins for ender pearls, fire resistance potions, obsidian and more.
  • Golden carrots: one of the best foods in the game, made with gold nuggets.
  • Golden apples: eight ingots and an apple give you a strong healing item.
  • Powered rails: they keep minecarts moving fast.
  • Gold armor: a single piece keeps most piglins calm in the Nether.
  • Netherite ingots: each one needs four gold ingots and four netherite scrap.

Clocks, beacon bases and light weighted pressure plates also use gold.

If you need a lot of gold, a farm may beat mining. Gold farms in the Nether collect drops from zombified piglins. Even so, a seed map helps you start strong with ore from the ground.

FAQ

What is the best Y level for gold?

Around Y -16 in most biomes. In badlands, gold also generates from Y 32 to Y 256.

Why is there so much gold in badlands?

Badlands get an extra batch of gold ore that also ignores the air exposure rule.

What pickaxe do I need for gold ore?

An iron pickaxe or better.

Is nether gold ore the same as gold ore?

No. Nether gold ore is a separate block found in the Nether. It drops gold nuggets and can be mined with any pickaxe.
