Lapis Lazuli Finder

Lapis lazuli is what you need to enchant gear. This Minecraft lapis lazuli finder predicts where lapis ore generates from your seed. Enter a seed and the map marks predicted veins near spawn. Click one to copy coordinates or a /tp command. Then mine enough lapis to keep your enchanting table busy.

Best Y Level for Lapis

Lapis ore generates from Y -64 to Y 64. It is most common around Y 0, near the line where stone turns into deepslate.

There are two batches. The first sits between Y -32 and 32 and peaks at Y 0. The second spreads evenly from Y -64 to 64.

So mining around Y 0 gives the best odds. It is also a comfortable height, above most lava lakes.

Around Y 0, you also find iron, gold, copper and redstone in smaller numbers. So a tunnel at this height gives a good mix. The stone also starts turning into deepslate here. Below Y 0, lapis becomes deepslate lapis ore, which takes a little longer to break. A Fortune pickaxe pays off quickly on lapis.

Hidden Lapis and Air Exposure

The second lapis batch has a strict rule. It never generates touching air. That means a lot of lapis is hidden inside solid rock, out of sight from caves.

As a result, cave exploring alone undercounts how much lapis is around. Branch mining through solid stone reveals the hidden veins. A seed map helps even more, since it shows veins you would never see from a cave.

Using the Lapis Lazuli Finder Map

Choose your edition and version, then enter your seed. The map shows predicted lapis veins near spawn, sorted by distance.

Click a result to copy its coordinates or a /tp command. You land on the surface above the vein. Next, dig down to the listed Y level and mine around the point.

A stone pickaxe or better works. Each ore drops several pieces of lapis, and Fortune adds more. Lapis is also used for blue dye and lapis blocks.

Limits of Lapis Predictions

Caves and aquifers carve through stone after ore is placed. Some predicted blocks may be gone when you arrive. Aquifers can also flood the area around a vein, so carry a few blocks to hold back the water.

Mine around each marker rather than one exact block. That covers small offsets and nearby blobs.

Lapis and Enchanting

Each enchantment at an enchanting table costs one to three lapis, plus experience levels. The top option costs the most.

To unlock the strongest options, place 15 bookshelves around the table. Leave one block of air between the table and the shelves. With that setup, the top option can reach level 30.

Lapis has other uses as well:

  • Blue dye for wool, glass, concrete and beds.
  • Blocks of lapis lazuli to store nine pieces in one block.
  • Decoration, since lapis blocks have a bright blue color.

A long enchanting session uses a lot of lapis. So mine a few good veins before you start. Each ore drops several pieces, and Fortune makes a big difference.

Some cleric villagers also sell lapis, though trading is slower. Mining near Y 0 is usually the faster route.
