Seed map › Versions › Java 1.17

Java Edition 1.17, Caves and Cliffs Part I, was released on June 8, 2021, and 1.17.1 followed on July 6. Both share the same generator. This Minecraft 1.17 seed map shows your world with its classic surface and the first wave of new underground blocks. Enter your seed to find villages, temples, strongholds and every biome near spawn.

What Part I Added Underground

Caves and Cliffs was split into two updates. Part I kept the old terrain and world height but added new blocks below ground:

  • Amethyst geodes, round pockets lined with calcite, smooth basalt and amethyst
  • Copper ore, spread evenly between Y 0 and Y 64
  • Deepslate and tuff blobs between Y 0 and Y 16, with deepslate ore variants replacing normal ores inside them
  • Pointed dripstone clusters, which rarely show up in regular caves
  • Glow lichen on cave walls

Notably, the new terrain, taller mountains and big caves were pulled from 1.17 during development. They arrived in 1.18 instead.

What 1.17 Did Not Have

Lush caves existed in the code, but they did not generate in normal worlds. You could only reach them through special world types such as single biome. So do not expect to find axolotls or azalea trees on this map.

The world still ran from Y 0 to Y 255. Diamonds still sat in the old low layers, just above bedrock. In short, the Overworld surface looks just like 1.16.

Do 1.16 and 1.18 Seeds Give the Same World?

Against 1.16.2 to 1.16.5, the answer is mostly yes. Terrain, biomes and structure positions carry over. Only the underground decoration differs, with geodes, copper and deepslate blobs added.

Against 1.18, the answer is a firm no. Version 1.18 replaced the whole Overworld generator. Every mountain, ocean and village moved. Therefore, if you plan to update a 1.17 world, keep in mind that new chunks will look completely different from your old ones.

Checking Your Version and Using the Minecraft 1.17 Seed Map

Check the bottom-left corner of the title screen, or look at your profile in the launcher's Installations tab. Both 1.17 and 1.17.1 fit this page.

  • Use structure markers to plan a route to the nearest village and stronghold.
  • Explore caves below Y 16 for deepslate and tuff, and look for geodes along the way.
  • Pick a base near a mountain or a coast. Terrain will not change while you stay on 1.17.
  • Grab copper early. It is common and easy to find in this version.

Amethyst Geodes and Copper Uses

Geodes stand out in cave walls thanks to their outer layer of smooth basalt and inner layer of calcite. Inside, amethyst clusters grow from budding amethyst. You cannot pick up budding amethyst, even with Silk Touch, so build your farm around it.

Amethyst shards craft into a spyglass and tinted glass. Copper is just as useful. You can craft lightning rods, spyglasses and copper blocks that slowly oxidize to green.

Both are new in 1.17, and both sit below the same old terrain. As a result, an old 1.16 base can gain a whole new mining layer when you explore new chunks.
