Seed map › Versions › Java 1.16

This page covers Java Edition 1.16.2 to 1.16.5. Version 1.16.2 arrived on August 11, 2020, and the later patches kept its generator. This Minecraft 1.16.5 seed map shows your Overworld, Nether and End as these versions build them. Enter your seed to find bastions, fortresses, ruined portals and the classic Overworld structures.

How 1.16.2 Changed the Nether

Version 1.16.2 changed the placement of Nether fortresses and bastion remnants. In both 1.16.1 and 1.16.2, the Nether is split into regions, and each region gets either a fortress or a bastion. However, the rules behind that split changed. As a result, the same seed puts its Nether structures in different places in 1.16.1 and 1.16.2.

That is why this site has two separate Nether Update maps. Speedrunners know this well, since bastion and fortress routes from one version do not work in the other.

Other Generation Changes in 1.16.2

A few smaller changes came with 1.16.2:

  • Bastion remnants now generate with piglin brutes, and most chests have gilded blackstone under them.
  • Plateaus appear more often at the edges of badlands.
  • Deep frozen oceans now generate with ice on the surface.
  • Nether fungi and plants now grow on every layer of nylium, not just the top.

Versions 1.16.3, 1.16.4 and 1.16.5 brought fixes but kept the same world generation.

Do 1.16.1 and 1.17 Seeds Match?

In the Overworld, a 1.16.1 seed and a 1.16.5 seed look nearly the same, apart from the badlands edges. In the Nether, though, fortresses and bastions move. So pick the right map before you plan a Nether trip.

Moving forward, 1.17 keeps the 1.16.5 surface and adds new blocks underground, such as geodes and copper ore. The real break comes with 1.18, which rebuilds the whole Overworld.

Checking Your Version and Using the Minecraft 1.16.5 Seed Map

Read the version in the bottom-left of the title screen, or check your launcher profile under Installations. Many servers still run 1.16.5, so check the server list too.

  • Switch to the Nether view and turn on bastion and fortress markers.
  • Divide Overworld coordinates by 8 to line up your portal with the nearest bastion.
  • Avoid bastions with piglin brutes until you have good armor.
  • Use ruined portals in the Overworld to reach the Nether early.

Five Nether Biomes on the Map

The 1.16.5 Nether has five biomes. Each one plays differently:

  • Nether wastes: the classic red Nether, with zombified piglins and ghasts
  • Crimson forests: hoglins and piglins, plus crimson fungi
  • Warped forests: endermen and few hostile mobs, often the safest place to build
  • Soul sand valleys: skeletons and ghasts, with slow soul sand
  • Basalt deltas: rough terrain and magma cubes

So turn on biome colors in the Nether view, then pick a portal spot that suits you.

Remember that each Nether region holds either a fortress or a bastion. So if you see a bastion marker close by, the nearest fortress may be a bit further out. Check both before you build your portal.

FAQ

Why do bastions move between 1.16.1 and 1.16.2?

1.16.2 changed the placement rules for Nether fortresses and bastion remnants, so the same seed puts them in different places.

Is 1.16.5 the same world as 1.16.2?

Yes. Versions 1.16.3 to 1.16.5 kept the 1.16.2 world generation.

What are piglin brutes?

Piglin brutes are strong piglins that generate inside bastion remnants from 1.16.2 onward. They attack on sight and are not distracted by gold.

Does the Overworld change from 1.16.1 to 1.16.2?

Very little. Badlands plateaus appear more often at biome edges, but terrain and structures are otherwise the same.
