The year cherry wood debuted

Before 1.20, cherry trees required enabling an experimental pack. In this release they are standard, so every cherry grove you find is a full source of the new wood family: logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, signs and boats.

You will also meet the new building block set that appeared at the same time:

• Pink petals, which can be placed in layers like flowers.
• Bamboo mosaic and chiseled bookshelves, which pair well with the pink palette.
• Hanging signs, which look especially nice hung from cherry beams.

Cherry leaves drop petal particles and have a fairly high chance to give saplings, so set up a small tree farm on the slope. Save a few saplings for bonemeal-grown trees around your home.

Because the grove here starts at your feet, you can skip the long search and begin building straight away.

Practical day one among the petals

Cherry groves sit on slopes next to meadows and mountains, so resources are close. Check for stone outcrops, because iron and coal appear in the neighbouring peaks.

Here is a sensible routine:

• Punch a few cherry logs for crafting, then make a wooden pickaxe.
• Collect sheep wool for a bed, and chase pigs for food.
• Look for bee nests in the trees, and take honey with a campfire and bottle.

At night, keep the lights on. The bright pink leaves look gentle, but zombies and skeletons spawn at night like anywhere else on the surface.

If you need a village, check the nearby meadow or plains on the map. Cherry groves themselves do not host villages in this version. With 11 blocks to the nearest grove from spawn, you can finish a cosy shelter well before dusk.
