What a close stronghold saves you
In an ordinary world the first ring of strongholds lies well over a thousand blocks from spawn, so players throw eyes of ender and walk for ages. Here the walk is short, which lets you plan the rest of the game around it. You still need blaze rods and ender pearls to craft the eyes, so the Nether trip stays, but the long trek afterward disappears.
- Portal room: twelve frames ring a small lava pool. Each filled frame helps light the portal.
- Silverfish: a spawner sits above the portal, and some stone bricks hide silverfish.
- Libraries and cells: side rooms hold bookshelves, cobwebs and chests with iron, bread and enchanted books.
Many frames start empty, though some arrive with an eye already in place, which cuts the number you need to craft.
Finding and entering the portal room
Throw an eye of ender and watch where it floats. It rises, travels in the stronghold's direction, then drops. Throw a second one from a point to the side and the two lines cross over the target. Dig down where the eyes sink to find the first stairway.
Inside, corridors branch, doors can be iron or wooden, and some stairs lead into dead ends. Place torches on the right-hand wall so you can retrace your steps.
- Kill silverfish quickly, because hitting one calls others out of nearby blocks.
- Bring a water bucket for the lava pool next to the portal.
- Craft a bed for the dragon fight before you step in.
Once the portal is lit, stock up on arrows, blocks and food before you jump.

FAQ
How far out do strongholds usually generate?
The first ring normally starts well over a thousand blocks from the world origin, so a stronghold within 900 blocks is unusual.
How many eyes of ender should I plan for?
Craft about twelve, since each eye is used for navigation and some can break when thrown. Frames that came with eyes reduce the number you need.
What is the silverfish spawner for?
It sits above the portal room and slowly spawns silverfish. Breaking it with a pickaxe stops the flow.
Can I find the stronghold without eyes of ender?
The 3D map shows its position, so you can dig straight down at the marker with a pickaxe and torches.
