Raiding the village chests for 1.20 gear

Standing in the village on day one lets you check its buildings for free supplies. The most valuable is the blacksmith, whose chest can hold iron, gold, diamonds, obsidian, bread and sometimes a saddle.

Make a short loop:

  • Open the blacksmith chest first, then any weaponsmith or toolsmith chests.
  • Take wheat, carrots and potatoes from the farms, replanting a seed for each.
  • Sleep in a village bed to skip your first night, if the bed is free.

Taking crops and chest loot is fine, but never hit a villager, because the iron golems will turn on you. Keep a bed spot and a few crops for the villagers themselves.

The surrounding plains give you flat ground, horses and plenty of grass for seeds. Bring a saddle from the chest and consider taming a horse to explore faster.

Wells, sand and camels in a 1.20 settlement

Not every village is plains-style, but 1.20 gives each type something special. A desert village may have a desert well with a block of suspicious sand underneath. Brush it carefully and you might find a sherd or a tool.

Savanna villages are where camels spawn, and cherry groves nearby supply the new pink wood. Taiga and snowy villages bring warm furnaces, and each has distinct houses to loot.

  • Check the map around spawn for a second village type.
  • Use bamboo planks if you reach a jungle, as the version added a bamboo set.
  • Trade for emeralds, then use them on enchanted books.

With a village literally under your feet, you can set up an iron golem guard, a bell, a farm and a nether-bound plan for diamonds. Take your time and pick a layout before expanding the settlement.

FAQ

Is it normal to spawn inside a village?

It is rare. A distance of 0 means the spawn point falls inside the village borders, but only a few seeds do this.

Will villagers get angry if I take food from their farms?

Taking crops is fine, but hitting a villager can make iron golems attack you. Replant what you harvest.

What is inside a desert well in 1.20?

A small block of suspicious sand sits beneath it. A brush reveals loot such as a stick, clay or a rare sherd.

Can I find a camel in a plains village?

Camels only spawn in savanna villages. Check your map for the closest savanna.
