Archaeology and trims: the 1.20 treasure loop

This version is all about finding things. Brushes dust suspicious sand and gravel to reveal pottery sherds, tools and sometimes a sniffer egg. You find those spots in desert wells, desert pyramids, warm ocean ruins and the new trail ruins.

Armour trims add a second hunt. Smithing templates sit in structure chests, and you copy them with diamonds and the right block. Trim an armour piece with a template and a material such as gold, copper or amethyst for a custom look.

  • Craft a brush from a feather, copper ingot and stick.
  • Mark trail ruins on the map, since they hold the rarest sherds.
  • Carry spare brushes, because they wear out.

Look at the seed map for deserts, ocean ruins and trail ruins near spawn. A world with several of these inside a short walk keeps your first week busy with real discoveries.

Savanna camels and a dry-land start

Savannas spawn flat terrain with acacia trees, horses and llamas, and they host the villages where camels live. A camel carries two players and can dash across flat ground, which is great for long overland trips.

Use your first hour well:

  • Chop acacia for planks and sticks, and look for oak or birch if you want other woods.
  • Find a village and tame a camel with a saddle. Cactus is its favourite food.
  • Look for cherry groves or bamboo jungles nearby, as the update added new wood types.

Savannas also tend to have flat building sites with good visibility, so a base is easy to place. The risk is that the ground can run dry of ponds, so bring a bucket and collect water as soon as you find any.

Check the full list for the world that mixes these elements with your favourite structure types.

FAQ

What do I need to brush suspicious sand?

A brush, which you craft from a feather, a copper ingot and a stick. Use it on the sand until the item pops out.

Can I sniff out a sniffer egg in 1.20?

Yes, brushing suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins can reveal a sniffer egg. Place it on moss to hatch it faster.

Which structures hold smithing templates?

Many do, including desert pyramids, jungle temples, bastions and ancient cities. Each has its own set of trim designs.

How do I ride a camel in 1.20?

Place a saddle on it and mount it. Press the sprint key to make it dash, though it needs a short rest afterwards.
