Frozen Ocean

The frozen ocean is an icy sea capped with a frozen surface and dotted with huge icebergs. Polar bears roam the ice, and the icebergs hide packed ice and blue ice. This frozen ocean finder reads your seed and shows the nearest frozen ocean on the map above. It is the fastest way to get blue ice for boat roads.

Where frozen oceans generate

Frozen oceans appear in the coldest climate zones. You often find them near snowy plains, ice spikes and other snowy biomes. As the temperature rises, they turn into cold oceans.

Further from land, the floor drops and the biome becomes a deep frozen ocean. Because cold zones are limited, frozen oceans are less common than temperate seas.

What you find in a frozen ocean

The surface freezes into ice in most places. In some warmer patches, only snow falls and the water stays open. Below, the floor is gravel in Java and looks almost barren.

  • Icebergs: made of snow blocks, packed ice and some blue ice.
  • Mobs: polar bears, salmon, squid, the nautilus and drowned.
  • Structures: shipwrecks, often stuck inside icebergs, and cold ocean ruins.

There is no kelp or seagrass here, so the seabed feels empty.

How to find a frozen ocean in your world

In game, travel toward snowy biomes and look for a white, flat sheet of ice on the horizon. Icebergs stick out clearly from far away.

On this map, enter your seed and select Java or Bedrock. The map flies to the nearest frozen ocean and outlines it for you. More frozen seas appear in the list on the left. Click one to center the map there.

Use the coordinates with /tp @s X 80 Z. Land on the ice, then walk to the closest iceberg.

Frozen ocean tips

Blue ice is the main prize. Mine it with a Silk Touch pickaxe, because it drops nothing otherwise. Boats on blue ice are extremely fast, which makes it perfect for Nether ice roads.

Be careful around polar bears. Adults turn hostile when you get near their cubs. Also, break the surface ice to fish, or use a boat in the open patches.

Frozen oceans also link well with other snowy biomes. Igloos, snowy villages and ice spikes can all be nearby on land. So when you pick an area from the list, check the coast around it. A single trip might give you blue ice, packed ice and an igloo basement to explore.

Frozen ocean finder: blue ice and icebergs

Icebergs come in different shapes and sizes. Some are tall and pointed, while others are wide and rounded. Many of them reach well below the surface, so check underwater too.

Blue ice usually appears in streaks inside the packed ice. Packed ice is useful as well. It does not melt, and boats move fast on it, though not as fast as on blue ice.

When comparing areas in the list, look for big frozen patches. Larger areas usually mean more icebergs to mine. Shipwrecks often hide inside icebergs, so you may find loot while you dig. Finally, take care at night, when drowned and other hostile mobs roam the ice.

Frozen ocean version history

The frozen ocean dates back to the Beta era, but it vanished from normal generation for many versions. It returned in Java 1.13 with the Update Aquatic. Icebergs and its current name both arrived during 1.13 development.
