Frozen peaks are tall mountain tops covered in snow, ice and packed ice. They are some of the highest points in the Overworld. This frozen peaks finder reads your seed and shows the nearest icy summits on the map above. Use it to find goats, packed ice or the perfect mountain view.
Where frozen peaks generate
Frozen peaks form at the highest points of the surrounding terrain. They need low erosion and low to moderate temperatures. Shapes vary a lot. You can get a single big peak, a few small hilltops, a ring around a valley or a long range.
Some ranges reach the build limit of Y=256. Groves and snowy slopes usually surround them. Jagged peaks may be nearby, but a valley separates them.
The deep dark is very common underneath. Dripstone caves sit higher up.
What you find on frozen peaks
Snow and snow blocks cover the surface. Glaciers of ice and packed ice break through in large blobs. This is one of the few places to collect packed ice without trading.
- Mobs: goats spawn here.
- Ores: emerald ore and infested stone generate in the rock.
- Structure: pillager outposts, which can perch on steep cliffs.
Apart from goats and the usual hostile mobs at night, the peaks are empty.
Reaching the summit with the frozen peaks finder
Enter your seed and select Java or Bedrock. The map flies to the nearest frozen peaks and marks the range with a biome icon. The list on the left gives you more peaks; click one to inspect it and copy coordinates.
In game, try /locate biome minecraft:frozen_peaks. Then type /tp @s X ~ Z. Teleporting with ~ keeps your height, so land somewhere safe or use a high Y value.
Tips for climbing frozen peaks
Ice is slippery, so slow down near edges. A water bucket helps you survive a fall. Packed ice does not melt, which makes it great for fast boat roads.
Mine packed ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe. Without Silk Touch, it breaks and drops nothing.
Goats can knock you off a peak. Keep your distance or deal with them first. At night, build a small shelter, since the open summit gives you no cover.
Ice blocks from frozen peaks
Frozen peaks are a top source of ice. You can collect both normal ice and packed ice here, as long as you use Silk Touch.
Nine ice blocks craft one packed ice. Nine packed ice craft one blue ice. Blue ice is the slipperiest block in the game and makes the fastest boat roads.
Packed ice does not melt near light, so it is safe for builds. Normal ice melts near bright light sources, so keep torches away from it.
Plan your trip with enough pickaxes. Large glaciers hold hundreds of blocks, and collecting them takes time.
Frozen peaks also give you some of the best views in the game. From the top, you can often see groves, snowy slopes and far valleys. Many players build a lookout tower or a small ice palace here. Use the map list to compare a few ranges and pick the tallest one.
Frozen peaks version history
The biome arrived in Java 1.18 as snowcapped peaks. It was renamed to frozen peaks before release. Goats, pillager outposts and emerald ore were added during the 1.18 snapshots.
