Frozen River

A frozen river is a river in a very cold region with a sheet of ice on top. It cuts through snowy plains, snowy taigas and ice spikes. This frozen river finder reads your seed and shows the nearest frozen rivers on the map above. They make fast ice paths and point you toward other snowy biomes.

Where frozen rivers generate

Frozen rivers replace normal rivers at the coldest temperatures. They often run through snowy plains, snowy taigas and ice spikes.

Most frozen rivers end in frozen oceans. Some form loops or lakes instead. They can also cross snowy beaches or stony shores near the coast.

Because they need such cold climates, frozen rivers are much less common than regular rivers. Finding one also tells you that a large cold region is close.

What you find in a frozen river

Ice covers the surface, with water below. Seagrass grows on the riverbed. Snow and grass blocks line the banks, and bushes may grow there too.

  • Water mobs: salmon and squid live under the ice.
  • Drowned: they spawn here, though rarely.
  • Underground: glow squid and bats appear in caves below.
  • Hostile mobs: the usual zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers spawn on land at night.

Tracing ice with the frozen river finder

Start by entering your seed. The map flies to the closest frozen river and marks it with a biome icon. Other frozen rivers show up in the list on the left; click one to see where it runs.

In game, type /locate biome minecraft:frozen_river. Teleport there with /tp @s X ~ Z if cheats are on. In survival, follow your coordinates into the cold zone.

Frozen rivers are long and thin, so pick a result near a spot you care about. A bend close to ice spikes or a snowy village makes a better target than a random stretch.

Tips for frozen rivers

Ice makes a fast boat road. Boats slide much quicker on ice than on land. Follow a frozen river to cross a snowy region in record time.

Mining ice without Silk Touch turns it into water if there is a block below. Over a river, that opens a hole. Keep that in mind when you dig.

For fishing, break a hole in the ice and cast your rod. Salmon are common here.

What is near a frozen river

A frozen river is a sign that you are in a very cold region. Snowy plains, snowy taigas and ice spikes usually surround it. Following it downstream often leads to a frozen ocean.

That makes frozen rivers a handy guide on the map. Use them to find ice spikes for packed ice, snowy taigas for foxes, or a snowy beach on the coast.

Remember that the cold biomes nearby can contain powder snow. Leather boots are a smart choice for the trip. Also, keep a stack of torches handy, since the long nights in open snow fields are full of hostile mobs.

Frozen rivers are also useful as safe paths. The ice is flat and open, so you can see mobs coming. Placing a few torches along the bank helps stop hostile mobs from spawning close to your route. A boat on the ice gets you across a snowy region fast.

Frozen river version history

Frozen rivers were added in Java Beta 1.9 prerelease. Their name changed in 1.13, when the aquatic update also added seagrass and salmon. Bushes began generating along the banks in 1.21.5.
