Jagged peaks are sharp, snowy mountain spikes that stab into the sky. They are steep, cold and full of exposed ore. This jagged peaks finder checks your seed and shows the closest ranges on the map above. That makes it easy to plan a mining trip or a dramatic mountain base.
Where jagged peaks generate
Jagged peaks form at the highest points of the land. They need low erosion and cold to temperate temperatures. Size varies from small snowy hilltops to ranges hundreds of blocks wide.
The tallest ones reach the Y=256 limit. Groves and snowy slopes usually surround them. Frozen peaks never touch them directly, though they can be close by across a valley or river.
The deep dark is common far below. Dripstone caves sit higher up, and lush caves may appear in humid areas.
What you find on jagged peaks
Snow blocks with snow layers cover the tops. Steep faces show bare stone, and ore is often exposed there.
- Ores: emerald ore is a key reason to visit. Iron and coal are also easy to spot on the cliffs.
- Infested stone: it generates deeper inside the mountain.
- Mobs: goats spawn here.
- Structure: pillager outposts are the only structure.
Using the jagged peaks finder
Put your seed into the map. It moves to the nearest jagged peaks and marks them with a biome icon. Scroll the list on the left for more ranges. A click centres the map on that range and shows its coordinates.
In game, type /locate biome minecraft:jagged_peaks. With cheats, teleport using /tp @s X 200 Z or similar, so you do not end up inside the rock.
Mountain ranges can look similar from the ground. Note a nearby river or valley on the map, so you can recognise your target peak when you arrive.
Tips for jagged peaks
Look along the steep stone faces for emerald, iron and coal. You can often mine them without digging a tunnel.
Climbing is slow and risky. Carry blocks to pillar up and a water bucket for falls. Goats add to the danger, since a ram can send you over the edge.
Builders love the sharp tips. A small tower or lookout on top makes a great landmark you can see from far away.
Mining tips for jagged peaks
Jagged peaks are one of the best places to find surface ore. The steep stone faces show emerald, iron and coal without any digging.
Use a Fortune pickaxe on emerald ore to get more emeralds. Silk Touch lets you take the ore block itself if you want it for decoration.
Be alert for infested stone. It breaks faster than normal stone and releases a silverfish. Silverfish can call others from nearby blocks, so deal with them quickly.
Finally, mine from a safe ledge. A missed step on these slopes can mean a long fall. Bring ladders or scaffolding to move around the cliffs.
Jagged peaks also make a strong base location if you like a challenge. Carve a tunnel into the side of a spike, and you get a cosy, safe interior. The outside acts as natural armour against mobs, and the view from a window at the top is hard to beat.
Jagged peaks version history
Jagged peaks were added in Java 1.18 under the working name lofty peaks. They got their current name before release. Since 1.20, the music track "A Familiar Room" can play here.
