Savanna Plateau

A savanna plateau is a raised, mostly flat area of acacia savanna that sits above the surrounding land. It shares the dry grass and acacia trees of the lowland savanna, but it has its own animal list, including llamas and spotted wolves. This savanna plateau finder locates it for your seed. The map above moves to the nearest one and marks it with a biome icon.

Where savanna plateaus generate

Savanna plateaus appear in warm, dry climates on elevated or steep ground. You often find them on top of plateaus or below stony peaks. So they sit higher than the regular savanna nearby.

Forests are the most common neighbour. Cherry groves, meadows, snowy slopes and badlands border it less often. However, savanna plateaus never generate next to windswept savannas or mangrove swamps. Dripstone caves are common near the surface, and the deep dark often lies far below.

The top of a plateau is usually flat and open, with acacia trees spread far apart. Steep cliffs drop to the lowland savanna at the edges. So the biome often looks like a raised table from a distance. That shape makes it easy to recognise on a hill or from the map.

What you find on a savanna plateau

The surface looks like normal savanna, with acacia trees, small oaks and dry grass. Warm-climate flowers, pumpkins and sugar cane also grow here.

• Animals: llamas, spotted wolves, armadillos, horses, donkeys, sheep and warm farm animals.
• Plants: tall grass, flowers, mushrooms and firefly bushes near water.

Unlike the regular savanna, villages, pillager outposts and abandoned camps do not generate here.

How to locate a savanna plateau

Enter your seed and choose Java or Bedrock. The map jumps to the nearest savanna plateau and draws its outline. Look at the list on the left for other plateaus, closest first. Click one to centre it.

In game, F3 shows minecraft:savanna_plateau. Look for acacia trees on raised land with cliffs at the edges. With cheats, teleport using /tp @s X 140 Z, since the ground is higher than usual.

Why visit a savanna plateau

The animal list is the main draw. Spotted wolves only spawn here, so tame one with bones if you collect variants. Llamas carry chests, which helps on long trips. Also, armadillos give scutes for wolf armour.

For builders, the high, flat tops give great views. A base on the plateau edge overlooks the lowland. Acacia wood is easy to collect too.

However, do not expect a village. If you want trades, look in the regular savanna below. And be careful near the cliffs, because falls can be long.

Caring for llamas and spotted wolves

Llamas spawn in herds on the plateau. Tame one by mounting it until hearts appear. You cannot steer a llama, but you can lead it with a lead. Other llamas will follow in a caravan. Give each one a chest to carry items.

Llamas spit at wolves and at players who hit them. So do not attack them, or the herd may respond.

Spotted wolves are tamed with bones, just like other wolves. Feed them meat to heal them. Also, armadillo scutes let you craft wolf armour to protect your new pet.

Horses and donkeys spawn here too, so bring a saddle if you plan to ride.

Java 1.7.2 added savanna plateaus with horses and donkeys. Java 1.11 added llamas. In 1.13 the ID changed from savanna_rock to savanna_plateau. Java 1.20.5 added armadillos and spotted wolves. Java 1.21.5 switched its farm animals to warm variants.
