Snowy Taiga

The snowy taiga is a spruce forest buried under snow. Frozen lakes, white foxes and quiet woods make it one of the prettiest cold biomes. Igloos and trail ruins can hide here too. This snowy taiga finder searches your seed for the closest one. Enter the seed above, and the map flies to the nearest snowy taiga and outlines it.

Where snowy taigas generate

Snowy taigas form in very cold areas with moderate to high humidity. If the climate gets warmer or wetter, a regular taiga grows instead. If it gets drier, you get snowy plains.

In fact, snowy plains are the most common neighbour, often across a frozen river. Forests, windswept forests, windswept hills, groves and frozen oceans can also border it. Lush and ice caves are fairly common underground. The biome is less common than a regular taiga.

Inside the biome, the ground is often hilly. Frozen lakes and rivers break up the trees, so you can travel quickly across the ice.

What you find in a snowy taiga

Snow layers cover almost everything except the ground under spruce leaves. Exposed water freezes, but lakes under trees often stay partly open.

  • Trees and plants: spruce and pine trees, ferns, large ferns and a few sweet berry bushes.
  • Animals: white snow foxes, ashen wolves, rabbits, sheep and cold pigs, cows and chickens.
  • Structures: igloos, trail ruins and abandoned camps.

In Java Edition, villages and pillager outposts do not generate here. In Bedrock Edition they can.

How to find a snowy taiga with the map

Enter your seed and edition. The map pans to the nearest snowy taiga and marks it with a biome icons shape. More results sit in the list on the left, closest first. Click one to move there, and copy the coordinates.

In game, F3 reads minecraft:snowy_taiga. White ground between dark spruce trees is the clue. If cheats are on, run /tp @s X 110 Z. Otherwise, bring warm thoughts and a boat for the frozen rivers.

Snowy taiga survival tips

Unlike snowy plains, this biome has lots of wood and normal farm animals. So it is a much easier cold start. Spruce trees give plenty of logs, and sheep provide wool for a bed.

Snow foxes are the main attraction. Like red foxes, they sleep by day and pick up items. Breed two with sweet berries to get a baby that trusts you. Ashen wolves are also unique to this biome, so tame one with bones.

However, sweet berries are rare here. Bring other food, or farm the few bushes you find. Also, check igloos for a hidden basement with a brewing stand and a cleric.

Snowy taiga vs snowy plains vs taiga

Cold areas can be confusing, so here is a quick comparison.

  • Taiga: green spruce forest without snow, with villages and outposts in Java.
  • Snowy taiga: spruce forest under snow, with igloos and white foxes.
  • Snowy plains: flat snow with few trees, igloos, snowy villages, rabbits and polar bears.

For wood and normal animals, the snowy taiga beats snowy plains. For villages in Java, choose snowy plains or a regular taiga instead.

Also, the snowy taiga is quieter than the plains. Trees block the wind and give shelter from views across the snow. So it suits cosy cabins and winter builds well.

Snowy taiga version history

Java 1.7.2 added it as cold taiga. Java 1.8 added rabbits, and 1.13 renamed it snowy taiga. Java 1.14 added snow foxes. Java 1.20 added trail ruins, and Java 1.20.5 made its wolves ashen. In Java 1.21.5, its farm animals became cold variants. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
