A windswept forest is a hilly, wooded highland where spruce and oak trees grow over rugged stone. It combines the rough terrain of windswept hills with real tree cover. It also holds emerald ore. This windswept forest finder locates it in your seed. Enter the seed above and the map flies to the nearest windswept forest and outlines it.
Where windswept forests generate
The biome replaces windswept hills where the climate is more humid. Temperatures are cold to medium, and erosion is moderately high. The land is raised, from flat plateaus to jagged slopes, and sometimes floating islands appear.
Typical neighbours are taigas, forests, birch forests, dark forests, windswept hills and swamps. Windswept forests are uncommon, but they form noticeable wooded ridges where they appear.
Inside the biome, the trees grow on uneven ground with steep cliffs and narrow valleys. Snow can settle on the higher slopes. So the forest often looks like a green and white mountain range. From a distance, it looks darker than plain windswept hills, because the trees hide most of the stone. That contrast helps you spot the border.
What you find in a windswept forest
Spruce and oak trees cover the slopes, with patches of bushes between them.
- Ores: emerald ore, extra coal ore and iron ore higher up.
- Underground: infested stone with silverfish.
- Animals: llamas, sheep and cold pigs, cows and chickens.
- Structures: abandoned camps can generate here.
Snow can also cover the higher parts, just like in other windswept biomes.
How to find a windswept forest
Start on the map. Enter your seed and edition, and it moves to the nearest windswept forest with a biome icon on it. Then browse the list on the left for more locations. Click any entry to centre it on the map.
In game, F3 shows minecraft:windswept_forest. Look for trees on steep, stony hills. With cheats, use /tp @s X 150 Z, then find a safe ledge before you move.
Survival tips for the windswept forest
This biome is a handy mix. You get wood, emeralds and ore in one place. So a base here can supply both building and mining.
Extra coal ore helps with torches and smelting early on. Iron ore sits higher in the mountains than usual, which makes it easier to reach. Also, llamas spawn in herds and can carry chests.
However, the steep ground and tree cover make travel slow. Mobs can hide in shaded spots, and infested stone can surprise you underground. Bring water to break falls on the cliffs.
Windswept forest vs windswept hills
These biomes share the same rugged shape, so it is easy to mix them up. The main difference is tree cover.
- Windswept hills: mostly grass and stone with a few trees.
- Windswept forest: dense spruce and oak trees across the slopes.
- Climate: the forest version forms where it is more humid.
Both share emerald ore, infested stone and llamas. However, the windswept forest also has extra coal and iron higher up. So it is better for early mining.
Abandoned camps are another difference. Since Java 26.3, they can appear in windswept forests but not in windswept hills. Their chests can hold explorer maps that point to other camps, trial chambers and ancient cities.
If you want wood and ore in the same place, the windswept forest is the better pick.
Windswept forest version history
Java 1.7.2 added it as Extreme Hills+. Java 1.13 renamed it wooded mountains. Snapshot 21w40a gave it the name windswept forest in 1.18. Java 1.21.5 added bushes and cold animal variants. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
Windswept Forest FAQ
What was windswept forest called before?
It was wooded mountains from Java 1.13, and Extreme Hills+ before that.
Do emeralds spawn in windswept forest?
Yes. Emerald ore generates here, as in other windswept hills biomes.
What trees grow in a windswept forest?
Spruce and oak trees grow here, along with bushes.
Do llamas spawn in windswept forests?
Yes. Llamas spawn in groups of 4 to 6.
Is windswept forest rare?
It is uncommon. It needs a humid climate on raised, eroded land, so it is smaller than many forests.
