Wooded badlands combine terracotta canyons with grassy plateaus dotted with small oak trees. They feel like a mix of desert and savanna. Our wooded badlands finder scans your seed and marks the nearest plateaus on the map above. You can then pick a spot for wood, gold and terracotta in one trip.
Where wooded badlands generate
Wooded badlands form in very hot regions with low erosion and higher humidity than normal badlands. They border regular badlands and often deserts. In cooler areas nearby you may find jungles, sparse jungles, bamboo jungles or forests.
The biome can sit on mountain terrain and reach Y=256. It may touch stony peaks there. Lush caves are common underneath, dripstone caves appear inland, and the deep dark sits lower down.
It never rains here. The biome is uncommon but usually larger than eroded badlands.
What you find in wooded badlands
Higher up, above Y=97, the surface turns to grass blocks and coarse dirt. Small oak trees grow there, with leaf litter and dead bushes under them. Lower down, the biome looks like regular badlands: red sand, stained terracotta and cacti.
- Mobs: armadillos and the striped wolf variant spawn here, along with sheep and warm pigs, cows and chickens.
- Gold: extra gold ore generates, just like in other badlands.
- Structures: badlands mineshafts and, since Java 26.3, abandoned camps.
Short and tall dry grass and cactus flowers add colour on the lower slopes.

Survival tips for wooded badlands
This is one of the best badlands for a base. Oak trees give you wood, while terracotta and gold are close by. Grass on the plateau also lets animals spawn naturally.
Looking for a striped wolf? Bring bones and check the plateaus. Armadillo scutes from the same area let you craft wolf armor.
Coarse dirt does not grow grass, so use a hoe to turn it into regular dirt first.
Layers of a wooded badlands plateau
This biome changes as you climb. Near the bottom, you see red sand, cacti and coloured terracotta, just like normal badlands. The middle slopes show bands of stained terracotta with dry grass and dead bushes.
Above Y=97, grass and coarse dirt take over. This is where the small oak trees and leaf litter appear. The plateau tops are flat enough for farms and houses.
Near water, you may very rarely find firefly bushes. Gold ore runs through the whole column, so mining down from the plateau can still pay off. Plan your base on top and your mine below.
Rain never falls here, even during storms elsewhere. Crops still grow, but bring a water bucket to start an infinite water source for farmland.
Wooded badlands version history
The biome came in Java 1.7.2 as mesa plateau F. It was renamed several times and became wooded badlands in 1.18. Armadillos and striped wolves joined in 1.20.5.
Leaf litter, dry grass, cactus flowers and warm farm animals came in 1.21.5. Java 26.3 added abandoned camps.
