How to Find a Cherry Grove and Its Pink Cherry Trees
The cherry grove is one of the prettiest biomes in Minecraft. It arrived in the Trails and Tales update (1.20) for both Java and Bedrock, and it is full of pink cherry trees, pink petals on the ground and falling blossom particles.
It is also the only source of cherry wood, a popular building set. This guide explains where cherry groves generate, how to spot one, why they are missing from old worlds, and how to find one fast with your seed.
Where cherry groves generate
Cherry groves are a mountain biome. They generate on high ground, in the same kind of places as meadows and groves. You will usually find them:
- On the slopes and plateaus of mountain ranges
- Next to meadows, groves, snowy slopes or jagged peaks
- Above the forests and plains at the foot of mountains
Cherry groves do not appear in low, flat areas, deserts, swamps or oceans. If you can see snowy peaks in the distance, head toward them. The cherry grove may be on the way up, mixed in with meadows.
They are not especially rare, but mountains can be far apart. Some players find one right at spawn, while others travel a thousand blocks or more.
What a cherry grove looks like
Cherry groves are easy to spot because nothing else looks like them:
- Pink tree canopies with dark, twisted trunks.
- Pink petals scattered on the grass.
- Falling pink particles that drift down from the leaves.
- Soft grass and gentle hills, often on a high plateau.
The pink colour stands out from a long distance, so climb a high point and look around. With render distance turned up, you can often see a grove from several hundred blocks away.
Mobs that spawn in cherry groves include pigs, sheep and rabbits. Bees are common too, because cherry trees can generate with bee nests.
Why your old world has no cherry groves
Cherry groves only appear in chunks generated in version 1.20 or later. If your world started in an older version, every chunk you have already explored keeps its old biomes. Updating the game does not add cherry trees to those areas.
To find one in an old world, travel to land you have never visited. New chunks generate with the latest biomes, including cherry groves. Since 1.18 terrain stays consistent, so new chunks blend well with old ones.
If you want a cherry grove close to your base, a seed map is the best way to check where new chunks will have one. Set the version on the map to 1.20 or later, since older versions will not show the biome at all.
Find a cherry grove from your seed
Biomes are set by the seed and version. Enter your seed in the cherry grove finder or on the main seed map and choose your edition and version. Cherry groves appear in pink, usually in small patches inside mountain areas.
Zoom out to see several options, then pick the closest one. Note its X and Z coordinates, or copy a /tp command if cheats are on. Since Java and Bedrock share terrain and biomes from 1.18 onward, a cherry grove on the map is in the same place in both editions.

Using the locate command
With cheats on, you can locate the nearest cherry grove:
- Java: /locate biome minecraft:cherry_grove
- Bedrock: /locate biome cherry_grove
The command returns coordinates. Remember that the game searches outward from you within a limited radius. If no cherry grove is close, it may report that none was found. Move a few thousand blocks and try again.
In Bedrock, using commands turns off achievements for that world, so many survival players prefer to use a seed map instead.
What to collect in a cherry grove
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| Cherry logs | Planks, stairs, slabs, doors, signs and boats in a pink wood set |
| Cherry saplings | Grow your own cherry trees anywhere |
| Pink petals | Decoration and pink dye |
| Cherry leaves | Decoration, collected with shears |
| Honey and honeycomb | From bee nests in the trees |
Collect plenty of saplings. Cherry trees grow from a single sapling, so you can plant a grove at your base and never travel back. Use bone meal on pink petals to get more of them.
Building with cherry wood
Most players look for a cherry grove because they want the wood. Cherry planks have a soft pink colour that works well for many styles. Here are some ideas:
- Japanese style builds. Combine cherry planks with dark oak, stone bricks and paper-like white blocks such as white concrete or birch.
- Gardens. Plant cherry trees around ponds, add pink petals and lanterns, and use moss for soft ground.
- Cottages. Cherry pairs nicely with spruce for a cozy, colourful roof or trim.
- Interiors. Cherry floors and furniture brighten up darker builds.
The full cherry wood set includes logs, stripped logs, wood, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, fence gates, doors, trapdoors, pressure plates, buttons, signs, hanging signs, and boats with or without a chest. You get all of this from cherry logs, so collect plenty while you are in the grove.
Cherry trees take some space to grow, so give saplings a clear area around them. If a sapling does not grow, check for blocks nearby and make sure there is enough light. Bone meal speeds up growth.
Plan a big harvest. A single grove usually has dozens of trees. Replant saplings where you cut trees down so the grove stays pretty for the next visit, and so you have a steady supply of pink wood. You can also plant a small grove right next to your base, since saplings grow anywhere with the right soil and light, not just in the cherry grove biome.
Cherry groves are also a nice place to build a base in their own right. They sit high up, so you get great views. The land is often gentle on top, with space for farms. Pigs, sheep and bees give you food, wool and honey from day one. The main downside is the climb, so build stairs or a water elevator to the lowlands.
Archaeology fans should note that trail ruins and other 1.20 features can appear in nearby biomes, so explore the surrounding area too.
FAQ
What version added cherry groves?
Cherry groves were added in the Trails and Tales update, version 1.20, for both Java and Bedrock.
Where do cherry groves spawn?
They generate in mountain areas, on slopes and plateaus, often next to meadows and groves.
Why can't I find a cherry grove in my world?
If your world was created before 1.20, explored chunks will not have them. Travel to new, unexplored land to find one.
Can I grow cherry trees?
Yes. Plant a cherry sapling on dirt or grass with enough space and light, and it grows into a cherry tree.
Are cherry groves in the same place in Java and Bedrock?
Yes, from 1.20 onward the same seed gives the same biome layout in both editions, so cherry groves line up.
