How to Find a Nether Fortress for Blaze Rods and Wither Skulls
A nether fortress is a huge maze of dark nether brick bridges and corridors. It is the only place to find blazes, which drop the blaze rods you need for eyes of ender and brewing. It is also home to wither skeletons, whose skulls summon the Wither.
Fortresses can be hard to find in the Nether's thick fog and twisting terrain. This guide covers where fortresses generate, how they relate to bastions, what to look for, and how to find one instantly with your seed.

Where nether fortresses generate
Nether fortresses can generate in any Nether biome. They are very large and often stretch across lava lakes, through netherrack walls and into open caverns. Parts of a fortress can be buried in solid rock, while other parts form long bridges in the open.
In Java Edition, fortresses and bastion remnants share the same placement grid. The Nether is divided into regions, and each region gets one structure. It is either a fortress or a bastion, with bastions being a bit more common. That means if you find a bastion, the nearest fortress is in a different region.
Bedrock Edition uses its own placement rules, and fortress positions differ from Java on the same seed. In both editions, fortresses are common enough that you rarely need to travel more than a few hundred blocks in the Nether.
What to look for
- Dark red bricks. Nether bricks are darker and more regular than netherrack.
- Long straight bridges on pillars, often crossing lava lakes.
- Nether brick fences along the walkways.
- Blazes, which glow yellow and fly around their spawners.
- Wither skeletons, tall black skeletons with stone swords.
The Nether is foggy, so your view is limited. Build a pillar or stand on a high ledge and look in every direction. In Java, you can also check the biome and direction with F3 while you scan.
A good habit is to travel along one axis in a straight line. Fortresses are long and sprawling, so a straight path through the Nether has a good chance of crossing one of their bridges.
Find a nether fortress from your seed
Structure positions come from your seed, so you can skip the search. Enter your seed in the nether fortress finder or on the main seed map, switch to the Nether, and choose your edition and version. Every fortress is marked.
Once you pick one, plan your portal. Nether coordinates are one eighth of Overworld coordinates. If a fortress is at Nether X 120, Z -40, the matching Overworld spot is X 960, Z -320. Build a portal there in the Overworld and it should open close to the fortress. The nether portal calculator does this for you, and how nether portals link explains the rules.
You can also use the locate command with cheats: /locate structure minecraft:fortress in Java, or /locate structure fortress in Bedrock.
What you find inside
| Find | Use |
|---|---|
| Blaze rods | Blaze powder for eyes of ender, brewing stands and fuel |
| Wither skeleton skulls | Three skulls and four soul sand summon the Wither |
| Nether wart | The base ingredient for almost every potion |
| Chests | Diamonds, iron, gold, saddles, horse armor and obsidian |
| Rib armor trim | A smithing template found in fortress chests |
Nether wart grows in small gardens on soul sand, usually near staircases. Collect some and plant it on soul sand at home so you never need to return for it. Blaze spawners sit on raised platforms with stairs, so they are easy to recognise.
Fighting blazes and wither skeletons
- Fire Resistance: blaze fireballs set you on fire. A potion makes them harmless, though you need a fortress for nether wart first.
- Snowballs: each snowball deals damage to blazes. A stack is a cheap ranged weapon.
- Shield: blocks blaze fireballs and skeleton arrows.
- Looting sword: raises the chance of blaze rods and wither skeleton skulls.
- Milk: clears the Wither effect from wither skeleton hits.
- Gold armor: keeps piglins neutral on the way there.
Wither skeletons are tall. Make tunnels two blocks high so they cannot follow you, and fight from inside a gap. Wither skeleton skulls drop rarely, so a Looting III sword helps a lot.
Tips for a smooth fortress trip
- Light the way back. Place torches or blocks on one side of each corridor.
- Write down your portal coordinates. The Nether is easy to get lost in.
- Bridge carefully over lava. Sneak while placing blocks, and avoid ghasts in open areas.
- Build a blaze farm. Enclose a blaze spawner to collect rods safely over time.
- Check nearby bastions. The bastion finder shows them, and their chests hold netherite upgrade templates.
For an End trip you need about 12 eyes of ender, plus spares, so aim for at least 7 blaze rods.
Fortress or bastion: how to tell them apart
Both fortresses and bastions are big dark structures in the Nether, so it is easy to mix them up in the fog. Here is how to tell them apart:
| Feature | Nether fortress | Bastion remnant |
|---|---|---|
| Main block | Nether bricks | Blackstone and basalt |
| Shape | Long bridges and corridors | Large, chunky castle |
| Mobs | Blazes and wither skeletons | Piglins, piglin brutes and hoglins |
| Main loot | Blaze rods, nether wart, skulls | Gold, netherite templates, ancient debris |
| Biome limits | Any Nether biome | Not in basalt deltas |
If you see black blackstone and gold blocks, you have found a bastion. Piglin brutes are always hostile, even if you wear gold, so be careful. Fortress bricks are a deep red, and the structure feels more like a long maze than a castle.
Both are worth visiting. Fortresses give you what you need to reach the End, while bastions give you the template you need for netherite. On a seed map, you can plan one Nether trip that covers both. Start with the fortress for blaze rods, then visit the closest bastion for loot.
Each structure suits a different stage of the game. Early on, the fortress is the priority, because you need blaze rods for brewing and for eyes of ender. Bastions are dangerous for a new player, since piglin brutes hit hard and the treasure room is packed with mobs. Come back with diamond armor, a shield and some golden apples before you raid one.
If you see a fortress on the map that is buried inside netherrack, you can still reach it. Tunnel toward it at the right Y level, and you will break into a corridor. Fortress corridors usually sit between about Y 48 and Y 70, but it varies, so check the structure on screen with F3 as you get close.
FAQ
How do I find a nether fortress fast?
Enter your seed on a seed map and switch to the Nether to see every fortress. Then build a portal at the matching Overworld coordinates.
What biome do nether fortresses spawn in?
Nether fortresses can generate in any Nether biome.
Why can't I find a fortress near a bastion?
In Java, fortresses and bastions share the same placement grid, and each region gets only one of them. The nearest fortress is in a neighbouring region.
How many blaze rods do I need to beat the game?
Each blaze rod makes two blaze powder, and each eye of ender needs one. Around 7 rods gives enough eyes for most stronghold trips.
Can I find a nether fortress without cheats?
Yes. Travel in a straight line through the Nether and watch for nether brick bridges, or check your seed on the SeedMapView nether fortress finder.
