How to Find a Woodland Mansion Fast

Woodland mansions are among the rarest structures in Minecraft. They are huge, packed with illagers, and they are the only natural source of evokers and their totems of undying. Many players play for weeks without seeing one.

This guide covers how to find a woodland mansion using maps from villagers, by scouting dark forests, or by checking your seed. The quickest way is the woodland mansion finder, which shows every mansion near you on the map.

Where woodland mansions generate

Woodland mansions only generate in dark forest biomes. Dark forests are easy to spot: tall dark oak trees with a thick canopy, plus giant mushrooms on the ground. They are so dark under the leaves that mobs can spawn during the day.

Mansions are also spread very far apart. In Java Edition, the game tries to place one mansion in each region of 80 by 80 chunks. That is 1,280 by 1,280 blocks. The attempt only works if the spot is a dark forest, so many regions have no mansion at all.

As a result, the nearest mansion is often thousands of blocks away. Distances of 5,000 to 10,000 blocks or more are common. Plan for a long trip.

Bedrock uses its own placement rules, but mansions are rare there as well. On both editions, a world with a big dark forest near spawn is lucky. If you are starting a new world and want a mansion close by, search for one with the seed finder or look through the best seeds.

Not every dark forest has a mansion. Small patches of dark forest are common, and the mansion check only happens at one spot per region. So finding a dark forest is a good start, not a guarantee.

Method 1: use a seed map

If you know your seed, this saves the most time.

  1. Start with your world seed. Java shows it with /seed and Bedrock lists it in the world settings.
  2. Open the woodland mansion finder and set the edition and version.
  3. Find the closest mansion icon. Click it to copy its coordinates or a /tp command.
  4. For long trips, divide X and Z by 8 and travel through the Nether. The nether portal calculator does it for you.

Mansion placement differs between Java and Bedrock, so make sure the edition matches your world.

Method 2: buy a woodland explorer map

Cartographer villagers sell a woodland explorer map once they reach Journeyman level. It costs emeralds plus a compass.

  1. Find or breed villagers and place a cartography table to make a cartographer.
  2. Trade with them to level up from Novice to Apprentice to Journeyman.
  3. Buy the woodland explorer map. It shows a mansion marker in the distance.
  4. Hold the map and walk toward the marker. Your position shows as a white pointer.

Explorer maps point to the nearest mansion that has not already been found by another map. They work on both editions. The downside is that the mansion can still be very far away, and the map only shows a small area until you get closer.

Need a village with a cartographer? The village finder shows the closest villages to spawn.

Method 3: scout dark forests

Without a seed or map, look for dark forests from high ground. Mansions are massive, three stories tall and made of dark oak and cobblestone, so you can see them from a long way off.

  • Fly with an elytra, or climb tall hills, and look over dark forest biomes.
  • Travel along the edges of large dark forests. Bigger forests give more chances.
  • Use /locate structure minecraft:mansion in Java or /locate structure mansion in Bedrock if cheats are on.

This method is slow. It works best combined with Nether travel to cover a lot of ground.

What is inside a woodland mansion

  • Vindicators with iron axes. They hit hard, so bring a shield.
  • Evokers that summon vexes and fangs. Each one drops a totem of undying on death.
  • Allays trapped in jail cells, in versions 1.19 and later.
  • Loot chests with items like enchanted books, diamond hoes and chestplates, golden apples and music discs.
  • Secret rooms hidden behind walls. Some hold a diamond block, lava or a fake end portal room.

The layout is random, so every mansion is different. Floors two and three often hide the best rooms. Mansions have no spawners, so once you clear the illagers and light the halls, the building stays safe. Some players even turn a cleared mansion into a base.

Tips for clearing a mansion

  1. Gear up. Iron armor at minimum, a shield and a good sword. Diamond gear makes it much easier.
  2. Bring food and light. Torches stop new mobs from spawning inside.
  3. Kill evokers first. Vexes fly through walls, and they keep coming while the evoker lives.
  4. Search walls for secret rooms. Look for odd gaps in the floor plan, then break in.
  5. Set a bed nearby. Mansions are usually far from home, so a spawn point close by saves a long walk if you die.

Preparing for the journey

Since mansions are so far away, the trip itself is a big part of the challenge. Pack for a long expedition:

  • Food: a full stack of something good, like cooked steak or golden carrots.
  • Boats: great for crossing oceans quickly.
  • A bed: to skip nights and set your spawn on the way.
  • Obsidian and flint and steel: to build Nether portals along the route.
  • Chests or a shulker box: mansions hold a lot of loot, and you will want room for it.
  • Building blocks and a pickaxe: to break into hidden rooms and wall off mobs.

Nether travel is by far the fastest option. A trip of 8,000 blocks becomes 1,000 blocks in the Nether. Build a portal at home, travel to the divided coordinates of the mansion, then build a portal there to come out right next to it.

Elytra are the other great option, but most players get them after the End. If you already have them, fly high above the dark forest and look for the mansion's roof.

Once you are there, think about setting up a small camp nearby. A mansion takes a while to clear and loot, and you may want to come back later to rescue the allays or find any secret rooms you missed. A portal next to the mansion makes return trips easy.
