Deep Dark

The deep dark is a pitch-black cave biome far underground. Sculk covers the floor, sensors listen for every step, and ancient cities hide in its depths. This deep dark finder reads your seed and shows where the biome lies beneath the surface. The map above points you to the nearest area so you can dig down with a plan.

Where the deep dark generates

The deep dark usually sits in the deepslate layer, deep below the surface. Under very tall mountains, it can reach up into the stone layer.

It forms where erosion is low. That is why you find it most often below mountain biomes like frozen, jagged and stony peaks, groves and snowy slopes. It also appears under plateaus such as cherry groves, meadows and pale gardens.

On the other hand, it is rare or absent below rivers, oceans, swamps and windswept biomes. Lava lakes never generate inside it.

What you find in the deep dark

Large patches of sculk cover the ground, surrounded by sculk veins. Glow lichen is almost absent, so lava and sculk catalysts are the only natural light.

  • Sculk sensors: they detect vibrations like footsteps.
  • Sculk shriekers: they warn of your presence. After enough warnings, a warden emerges.
  • Sculk catalysts: they spread sculk when mobs die nearby.
  • No natural spawns: regular mobs do not spawn here, though monster rooms still work.
  • Ancient cities: they generate only in this biome. Mineshafts and trial chambers do not generate inside it.

How to use the deep dark finder

Enter your seed above. The map moves to the nearest place where the deep dark lies underground and marks it with a biome icon. Check the list on the left for more spots, often below mountain ranges. Click one to see its coordinates.

In game, /locate biome minecraft:deep_dark works too. Then use /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city for a city. With cheats, teleport to a safe Y value in the deepslate layer, or dig down carefully in survival.

Keep in mind that the marked area is below ground. The surface above may be a mountain, so expect a long dig or a deep cave system.

Deep dark survival tips

Sneak as much as you can. Sneaking does not trigger sculk sensors, so it keeps shriekers quiet. Placing wool also blocks vibrations.

Avoid the warden. It is far stronger than most players and applies the Darkness effect. If one appears, back away quietly or distract it by throwing items or snowballs.

Ancient city chests hold great loot. Look for echo shards, Swift Sneak enchanted books and enchanted golden apples. Echo shards plus a compass craft a recovery compass.

Before you dig down

Gear up first. Bring torches, food, blocks and plenty of wool to dampen sound.

Plan an escape route. Mark your way back with torches so you can leave fast if a warden appears.

Lastly, avoid fighting in the open. Quiet movement keeps you safe.

It also helps to know what to skip. Avoid sprinting and jumping near sculk, since both make noise. Breaking blocks near sensors also counts as noise, so never let a fight drag on. Each loud action raises the warning level and brings the warden closer.

Deep dark version history

The deep dark was announced at Minecraft Live 2020. It joined the game in Java 1.19, The Wild Update, together with ancient cities and the warden. In 1.21, trial chambers became less likely to generate there.
