The nether wastes are the classic Nether biome: red netherrack hills, lava seas, glowstone clusters and wandering zombified piglins. This nether wastes finder reads your seed and shows the nearest areas on the map above. The map switches to the Nether for you. Use it to find open ground for a portal, a fortress route or a gold farm.
Where nether wastes generate
The nether wastes are one of five Nether biomes and among the most widespread. They fill the gaps between soul sand valleys, crimson forests, warped forests and basalt deltas.
Large lava oceans lie at the bottom of many wastes areas. Above them, netherrack forms huge caverns, cliffs and pillars. Many players arrive here on their first trip through a portal.
What you find in the nether wastes
Netherrack makes up almost everything. Inside it, you find nether quartz ore and nether gold ore. Glowstone hangs from the ceiling, and magma blocks appear near lava.
- Mobs: zombified piglins, ghasts, magma cubes, endermen, piglins and striders in the lava.
- Structures: Nether fortresses, bastion remnants and ruined portals.
- Resources: quartz for building and redstone, gold nuggets, and glowstone dust.
Ancient debris can be found here too, deep in the netherrack, as in every Nether biome.
The terrain is rough and full of drops. Netherrack cliffs, floating chunks of rock and huge open caves make travel slow. Therefore, many players build bridges and tunnels rather than walking across.
How to find nether wastes with this map
In game, step through any Nether portal. There is a good chance you land in or near the nether wastes.
For a specific spot, use the finder. Enter your seed and pick Java or Bedrock. The map switches to the Nether dimension on its own. Then it flies to the nearest nether wastes and marks the area with a biome icon. Want alternatives? The list on the left shows more, and a click recenters the map.
Remember that one block in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld. Multiply the Nether X and Z by 8 to find the matching Overworld spot for a portal link.
Nether wastes survival tips
Wear at least one piece of gold armor. Piglins attack players who are not wearing gold. Also, never hit a zombified piglin, because the whole group will turn on you.
Ghasts shoot explosive fireballs. Hit the fireball back to deflect it, or build with cobblestone, which resists the blasts better than netherrack. Finally, never dig straight down here. Lava pockets hide everywhere.
Nether wastes finder for portal planning
The nether wastes are often the best place to build a Nether hub. The open caverns give you room, and netherrack is quick to dig through for tunnels.
Here is a simple plan. First, use the finder to pick a nether wastes area near your Overworld base. Next, build your Nether portal there. Then dig tunnels along the X and Z axes to connect other portals.
Because of the 1:8 ratio, short Nether trips cover long Overworld distances. For example, 100 blocks in the Nether equals 800 in the Overworld. Pair your tunnels with blue ice roads, and you can cross huge areas fast. Wall them in, so ghasts and wandering mobs cannot reach you.
Nether wastes version history
Before the Nether Update, the whole Nether was a single biome simply called the Nether. In Java 1.16, it was renamed to the nether wastes. Four new Nether biomes were added beside it, along with piglins, bastions and ancient debris.
