Digging a stronghold under the new caves

The 1.18 caves are huge, which changes how you approach a stronghold. A plain staircase may break into a wide cheese cave or an aquifer long before you reach the stone bricks.

Take these precautions:

• Pack water to extinguish lava below y -54.
• Place torches as you descend to see dark caves.
• Bring blocks to cover gaps and bridge chasms.

The game also reshapes terrain around the structure, so some strongholds sit in a pocket carved to fit. When you follow an eye of ender and it dives, dig down at that spot.

Because the depth range is larger, strongholds can lie deeper than before. Expect to dig through deepslate, which is slower to mine. Use an efficiency pickaxe if you have one.

The 604 blocks of plains are the easy part. The dig is the challenge.

Plains travel and Nether trips

While you hunt for blaze rods and pearls, you can use the plains to your advantage. The flat ground lets you spot endermen from afar and build a quick shelter.

A simple plan:

• Gather iron and craft a bucket, shield and armour.
• Build a Nether portal near spawn to travel quickly.
• Find a fortress for blaze rods.

In the Nether, one block travelled equals eight in the Overworld, so a tunnel there can shorten the walk to a stronghold. Build your portal near the Overworld coordinates and tunnel along a straight line.

Before entering the End, set up a base near the stronghold with a bed and chests, and rest until morning if possible. The stronghold itself holds libraries, prison cells and a portal room. Find the portal room, place eyes and begin the final fight when ready.
