Wild Update biomes worth chasing

The headline arrival is the mangrove swamp, a warm, muddy biome with tall roots and a leaf canopy. It adds mud, packed mud, mud bricks and mangrove wood, and frogs live in its pools.

Frogs deserve their own errand. Tadpoles grow into frogs that eat small magma cubes and drop froglights, a glowing decorative block, so a trip to the Nether with a frog is a classic 1.19 project.

  • Carry buckets to scoop tadpoles from swamp water.
  • Use mangrove propagules to regrow the trees.
  • Craft a chest boat to move supplies through the shallow waters.

When browsing the list, favour seeds with a swamp or a lush cave within reach of spawn. Plains spawns, like the top one, give you open space for crops and animals while the swamp is just a short walk.

Going deep without dying

The other big change of 1.19 is the deep dark, a cave biome filled with sculk and home to the ancient city. It sits at the bottom of the world, so any plan to reach it starts with a strong supply run.

Do these things first:

  • Mine iron and gold, then craft solid armour and a shield.
  • Gather wool or carpet to dampen sculk vibrations.
  • Bring a recovery compass, crafted from echo shards, if you have found some.

Echo shards appear in ancient city chests, and the recovery compass points to your last death, which is useful in such a dark place.

Use the allay too. These flying helpers fetch items matching what you give them, and you can rescue them from pillager outposts and woodland mansions. An allay is handy for sorting loot in the early game.

FAQ

Where do I find a warden in 1.19?

Wardens spawn in the deep dark when you trigger sculk shriekers enough times. They do not appear in other biomes.

What is a recovery compass?

It is a compass made from echo shards that points toward your most recent death location.

How do I breed frogs?

Feed slimeballs to two frogs. They lay frogspawn that hatches into tadpoles.

Do 1.19 worlds have chest boats?

Yes. They were added in this update, letting you carry a stack of items while sailing.
