SeedMapView vs Amidst: The Amidst Alternative for New Versions
Quick answer: Amidst only supports Minecraft up to 1.17, so it cannot show worlds made in 1.18 or later. SeedMapView is the Amidst alternative for current versions: it runs in your browser, supports Java 1.12 to 26.3 and Bedrock 1.18 to 26.60, and adds 3D terrain, ores and loot.
Amidst was the classic desktop seed viewer. It is open source and was loved by speedrunners and map makers. However, its last release, version 4.7, added support for Minecraft 1.17, and the project is looking for a new maintainer. Since 1.18 rebuilt the whole Overworld generator, Amidst cannot draw today's worlds. Here is how SeedMapView compares.

Why Amidst stopped working for new worlds
Minecraft 1.18, Caves & Cliffs part 2, replaced the old layer-based biome generator with 3D noise. Biomes now depend on height, mountains reach Y 320 and caves go down to Y −64. Amidst was built for the old system. Its last release supports 1.17, and nothing newer.
As a result, there is no deep dark, no cherry grove, no pale garden and no trial chamber. Moreover, the biomes of any 1.18+ seed would simply be wrong. If you play on a current version, an Amidst alternative is no longer optional.

What you get with SeedMapView
SeedMapView uses cubiomes, the same open-source engine family that power users trust, compiled to run in your browser. On top of that, it adds the parts Amidst never had:
- Every version since 1.12, each with its own generator, plus Bedrock from 1.18.
- A 3D view with real terrain heights and block textures.
- Ore veins for ten ores, each with its Y level.
- Chest loot for temples, shipwrecks, bastions and End Cities.
- 66 biome finders and a finder for every structure.
- A seed finder that checks thousands of seeds for your conditions.

No install, no Java, no launcher profile
First of all, Amidst is a Java program. You download a .jar, keep a Java runtime installed and point it at your Minecraft installation. In contrast, SeedMapView is a web page. Open it on Windows, macOS, Linux, a Chromebook or your phone, type the seed and the map appears.
Want to open your own world? Press Open level.dat and pick the file from your world folder. The seed, edition, version and spawn are read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
When Amidst still makes sense
Still, Amidst is a fine choice for one job: browsing worlds from Minecraft 1.17 and older offline, for example Beta worlds, which version 4.7 can show. For 1.12 to 1.17 both tools work. For anything newer, however, use SeedMapView.
